General Presentation

A virtually identical third and final phase was constructed in 1995, once again after seeking and obtaining Seaway approval. Also using three semi-Kaplan vertical units, the only significant difference was an innovative method of construction using upstream and downstream cofferdams with poured concrete intake structures rather than the previously utilized pre-fabricated intakes.

The Côte Ste-Catherine powerhouse constitutes a striking particularity as its run-of-river production is substantially greater in winter than in summer. In fact, the head is higher when navigation is interrupted during freeze-up due to the Seaway lowering the downstream tailrace water level.
