General Presentation

Côte Ste-Catherine I is the second endeavour achieved by Hydromega. Located 15 km from Montreal, the powerhouse is built directly on the St-Lawrence Seaway dike and benefits from a 10 meter head between the upstream seaway and the downstream diversion canal.

The site is unique in that it is one of the few that pumps water over the dam using the siphon method. No permanent personnel is required to operate the station as it is fully automated and can be monitored from a remote location.

As the water intakes are located adjacent to the canal at the lock entrance, prior to the building of the powerhouse, scale model studies in a specialized hydraulic laboratory were necessary to guarantee the navigability of the 27 000 ton ships using the canal.
